Lost Skin
Chapter 3
That night at the hotel Mona was sitting at her dresser wiping her make-up off. Her thoughts turned to Finn. Looking at Frank reading the paper in a soft cushy green chair she wonders if Frank is attached to Finn as much as she is. Every time she sees his face, all the love she has trapped inside her heart for Jesse, wants to burst out. Finn has given her a chance to love a child again.
Looking back in the mirror she sees they years of age creeping across her face. But, her eyes sparkle with renewed hope. She does not believe they found Finn on accident. Jesse guided them to Finn knowing their lives could be blessed with so much love if they took him in. Taking a closer look in the mirror she analyzes the wrinkles that have formed around her eyes. She wonders if she is to old and to selfish to even consider such a thing. What if they boy’s parents return? What if he is gone when his real parents come looking for him?
Rubbing her night cream gently into her face with large circular motions thoughts of adopting Finn race through her mind. Is it possible she thinks? One thing she knows for sure is that she does not want Finn going to an orphanage. That would surely break his spirit and working in a dirty, greasy factory was no place for him, not at this stage in his life. He was an extremely bright and intuitive boy and with an education and some love he could go far in life. His caring nature would be washed away in an orphanage.
Setting her night cream down she wondered if Finn would like to go to America. If he did she could arrange for him to go to school, meet the other kids in town, join clubs, do everything a normal teenage boy does. Smiling to herself she thought of delicious smells of cookies and pies wafting through the house with eager faces ready to devour her tasty desserts. Looking at Frank through the mirror she thought this could work. They could take Finn back to their farm in Indiana and leave their information with the embassy in case his parents came searching for him. If they did well, then they could deal with that when it happened. Setting her mind she turned to face Frank and cleared her throat.
